Why this activity works

Sale signs can hide the comparison that matters. Students calculate per-unit cost, distinguish dollars off from percent off, combine discounts with tax, and explain why reversing a percent change does not restore the original price.

Teaching note

Encourage multipliers such as 0.80 for 20% off and 1.07 for 7% tax. They reduce multi-step confusion and prepare students for exponential reasoning.
