How to approach order of operations

The order of operations provides one consistent interpretation for a numerical expression: grouping symbols, exponents, multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right.

Multiplication does not automatically come before division, and addition does not automatically come before subtraction. Operations at the same level are completed in their written order.

Follow the reasoning step by step

Evaluate 18 − 3(4) + 8 ÷ 2.

  1. Multiply 3(4) = 12.
  2. Divide 8 ÷ 2 = 4.
  3. Rewrite 18 − 12 + 4.
  4. Work left to right: 6 + 4 = 10.

Solution: 10.
