How to approach rounding numbers
Rounding replaces a number with a nearby benchmark at a chosen place. Find the rounding digit, inspect the digit immediately to its right, and then replace all following digits with zeros.
A right-hand digit of 5 or more increases the rounding digit by one; 4 or less leaves it unchanged. Number lines can show which benchmark is nearer.

Follow the reasoning step by step
Round 3,647 to the nearest hundred.
- Locate the hundreds digit, 6.
- Look one place right at the tens digit, 4.
- Because 4 is less than 5, keep the 6.
- Replace the tens and ones digits with zeros.
