How to approach angles practice

Angle relationships allow unknown measures to be found without direct measurement. Complementary angles total 90°, supplementary angles total 180°, and vertical angles are congruent.

When parallel lines are cut by a transversal, corresponding and alternate interior relationships provide additional equal or supplementary pairs.

Learning objectives

  • Find complementary and supplementary angles
  • Use vertical-angle relationships
  • Solve angle equations

Skills to review first

  • Angle vocabulary
  • One-step equations
  • Reading diagram markings
Worked example

Follow the reasoning step by step

An angle is complementary to 34°. Find its measure.

  1. Complementary angles total 90°.
  2. Write x + 34 = 90.
  3. Subtract 34 from both sides.
  4. Check that the two measures total 90°.

Solution: 56°.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Using 180° for complementary angles
  • Assuming adjacent angles are congruent
  • Trusting drawing scale instead of given relationships
