How to approach dividing decimals

When the divisor is a whole number, divide normally and bring the dividend's decimal point straight into the quotient. When the divisor is a decimal, move its decimal point until it becomes a whole number and move the dividend's point the same number of places.

Moving both decimal points preserves the quotient because both quantities are multiplied by the same power of ten. Multiplication provides a reliable check: quotient times divisor should equal the dividend.
