How to approach dividing fractions

Dividing by a fraction asks how many groups of that fractional size fit into another quantity. The standard algorithm keeps the dividend, changes division to multiplication, and replaces the divisor with its reciprocal.

Whole and mixed numbers should be rewritten as fractions first. After multiplying, simplify the quotient and use estimation to check whether its size makes sense.

Learning objectives

  • Divide fractions using reciprocals
  • Divide with whole and mixed numbers
  • Simplify and interpret fractional quotients

Skills to review first

  • Fraction multiplication
  • Reciprocals
  • Converting mixed and improper fractions
Worked example

Follow the reasoning step by step

Divide two and one fourth by three eighths.

  1. Convert two and one fourth to nine fourths.
  2. Keep nine fourths and multiply by the reciprocal eight thirds.
  3. Cross-cancel before multiplying.
  4. Multiply the remaining factors and simplify.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Flipping the dividend instead of the divisor
  • Taking both reciprocals
  • Forgetting to convert mixed numbers before dividing
