How to approach exponent rules

Exponent rules describe repeated multiplication efficiently. Multiply like bases by adding exponents, divide by subtracting exponents, and raise a power to a power by multiplying exponents.

Zero and negative exponents require special attention: a⁰ = 1 for a ≠ 0, and a⁻ⁿ = 1 ÷ aⁿ. Simplified answers should use positive exponents unless directions say otherwise.
