How to approach percent increase & decrease

Percent change compares the amount of change with the original value: percent change = change ÷ original. The sign of the change determines whether it is an increase or decrease.

Always divide by the starting value, not the ending value. Convert the decimal quotient to a percent and state the direction in the final answer.
