How to approach percent problems

Percent means “per hundred.” To find a percent of a quantity, convert the percent to a decimal or fraction and multiply by the whole.

Percent equations connect part, whole, and rate: part = rate × whole. Labeling which quantity plays each role prevents the common mistake of dividing in the wrong order.

Learning objectives

  • Find a percent of a number
  • Find a missing part, rate, or whole
  • Solve percent word problems

Skills to review first

  • Decimal multiplication
  • Fractions out of 100
  • Solving one-step equations
