How to approach slope practice

Slope measures vertical change divided by horizontal change: m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁). Positive slopes rise left to right, negative slopes fall, horizontal lines have slope zero, and vertical slopes are undefined.

Use the same point order in both numerator and denominator. Simplify the ratio and include the sign.

Follow the reasoning step by step

Find the slope through (−2, 1) and (4, 10).

  1. Find vertical change: 10 − 1 = 9.
  2. Find horizontal change: 4 − (−2) = 6.
  3. Write 9⁄6.
  4. Simplify by 3.

Solution: m = 3⁄2.
