Mean, median, mode, and range describe a data set in different ways. Mean balances all values, median marks the center, mode identifies frequency, and range measures spread.

Sort the data before finding median or mode. Choose a statistic based on the question and note that outliers affect the mean more strongly than the median.

Follow the reasoning step by step

Analyze 2, 4, 4, 7, 8.

  1. The data are already ordered.
  2. Mean: (2 + 4 + 4 + 7 + 8) ÷ 5 = 5.
  3. Median is the middle value, 4; mode is the repeated value, 4.
  4. Range: 8 − 2 = 6.

Solution: Mean 5, median 4, mode 4, range 6.
