Chapter 06 of 10

Exponents

What patterns let us work efficiently with repeated multiplication?

Exponents compress repeated multiplication. The exponent rules are consequences of that meaning—not disconnected tricks. Expanding a small example is often the fastest way to remember which rule applies.

The big ideas

Understand these before you worry about speed.

Same base: combine exponents

Multiply powers with the same base by adding exponents; divide by subtracting exponents.

Examplex3x5=x8\displaystyle x^3\cdot x^5=x^8 and x7x2=x5\displaystyle \frac{x^7}{x^2}=x^5.

A power multiplies exponents

When a power is raised to another power, multiply the exponents. Apply an outside exponent to every factor in a product.

Example(2x³)² = 4x⁶.

Zero and negative exponents

A nonzero base to the zero power is 1. A negative exponent indicates a reciprocal.

Examplex3=1x3\displaystyle x^{-3}=\frac{1}{x^3} for x0\displaystyle x\ne 0.

Scientific notation uses powers of ten

Write a nonzero number as a coefficient whose absolute value is at least 1 but less than 10, multiplied by a power of ten. Moving the decimal left creates a positive exponent; moving it right creates a negative exponent. The number of places moved is the exponent's magnitude.

Example0.00072=7.2×104\displaystyle 0.00072=7.2\times10^{-4} because the decimal moves four places to the right.

Problem

Simplify 6x5y23x2y\displaystyle \frac{6x^5y^{-2}}{3x^2y}. Write with positive exponents.

  1. Divide coefficients: 63=2\displaystyle \frac{6}{3}=2.
  2. Subtract x exponents: x5x2=x3\displaystyle \frac{x^5}{x^2}=x^3.
  3. Subtract y exponents: y2y1=y3\displaystyle \frac{y^{-2}}{y^1}=y^{-3}.
  4. Rewrite y3\displaystyle y^{-3} as 1y3\displaystyle \frac{1}{y^3}.
Answer2x3y3\displaystyle \frac{2x^3}{y^3}
